Lowenstein Sandler’s Bankruptcy & Restructuring Department has been selected to serve as counsel to the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors, representing the interests of survivors of sexual abuse, in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy case of the Franciscan Friars of California, Inc.  The committee is comprised of 7 survivors of sexual abuse.  The Franciscan Friars of California, Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection on December 31, 2023 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, Oakland Division. 

Lowenstein also serves as counsel to committees representing the interests of survivors in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy case of (i) the Roman Catholic Bishop of Oakland (California) and (ii) the Diocese of Camden (New Jersey), where a settlement has been reached under which the Diocese will contribute $87.5 million plus the proceeds of any recoveries against its insurance carriers to a trust to compensate more than 300 survivors of sexual abuse within the Diocese.
