Lowenstein Sandler’s Elie Honig and Claudia Lorenzo succeeded in securing a dismissal of all charges filed against CNN journalist Keith Boykin, who was arrested on May 30, 2020, while covering a protest against police brutality and institutionalized racism in New York City. The protest was one of many held across the country in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.
Boykin was on a bicycle photographing a peaceful protest when he was arrested for the misdemeanor charges of “walking on the highway” and “disorderly conduct – blocking vehicular traffic.” According to his Twitter feed, he was held in a jail cell for over 6 hours with 35 others with no social distancing.
Through extensive negotiations with city officials, the Lowenstein team convinced the city to drop all charges.
