Sam Noel counsels clients on all facets of intellectual property. Corporations rely upon him through all stages of intellectual property development, including strategy, patent preparation, patent prosecution, and patentability analysis.

With a background as a professional engineer (P.E.) and with engineering work experience both in the U.S. and overseas, Sam offers an informed perspective on new technologies and related businesses. His work is bolstered by his patent experience in electronics, wireless devices, machine learning, computer architecture, virtualization, networking, software, semiconductors, manufacturing, medical devices, mechanical and refrigeration systems, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Sam maintains a special focus on green technologies and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accredited professional (LEED AP).

Passionate about his pro bono work, Sam has been recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) six years in a row for his work with inventors through the Mi Casa Resource Center’s ProBoPat program, based in Denver, Colorado; Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, based in New York; and California Lawyers for the Arts, based in California. He has also been honored by the Utah State Bar, which gave him its Pro Bono Publico Young Lawyer Award in 2018.

Sam is Affiliate Faculty at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University where he is the Patent Faculty Clinic Supervisor for the Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic, overseeing prior art searches, patent application preparation, and patent filings by clinic students. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, where he helps oversee patent counseling and patent drafting for student teams in the Bench-to-Bedside program.

Sam is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications related to cloud computing technologies, including machine learning and other artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
  • Participate in the patent work related to manufacturing of various types of products, such as semiconductors, displays, electrochromic glass, dental appliances, etc.
  • Manage patent prosecution for an international ride sharing company.
