Lowenstein Sandler mourns the sudden passing of our colleague and friend, Jay Stewart, on April 19, 2021.

Jay retired as a partner of the firm at the end of 2020 but continued to consult on a variety of cases. He was one of the pioneers of environmental law in the United States and was integral to the development and growth of our environmental practice.

He will always be remembered by his colleagues for his calm demeanor, humility, dry wit, great legal abilities, and–above all–his kindness.

One of New Jersey's foremost environment lawyers, Jay handled large and complex Superfund cases, including the nation's first Superfund trial. That was followed by many matters involving remediation cost recovery and natural resource damage assessment.

Recognized for his extensive knowledge of state and federal environmental laws, Jay provided both trial and appellate representation in toxic tort actions and government enforcement and penalty proceedings. He had an outstanding track record in cases where the scope of his clients' liability was broad but their defenses were limited.

Jay also represented clients in renewable energy projects. A thought leader in his field, he published widely in professional journals.

Beyond all that, he was a devoted husband and father of two; an avid skier, snowshoer, and kayaker; and an all-around good guy. 

Jay received his J.D., cum laude, from the New York University School of Law and his B.A., summa cum laude, from Seton Hall University.
